Diabetes disease impairs the glucose assimilation within the body which is the main source of energy for our body. When food is consumed it is converted into sugar and at this stage it is the pancreas that creates insulin hormone for breaking down the sugar and passing it on as energy to the body cells. However when affected by diabetes, the pancreas creation of insulin gets impaired or absolutely halted. The warning signs of diabetes begin with polyuria (frequent urination) and polydipsia (chronic thirst). Further few other warning signs of diabetes are undue fatigue, an unexplainable weight loss, more time for healing of wounds or cuts, lethargic feeling, etc. The warning signs of diabetes must be reported to the doctor immediately and proper investigations done. If such warning signs of diabetes are ignored the patient will most likely develop serious complications that can prove fatal. Depending on what stage of diabetes the patient is having and the type of diabetes he is suffering from the ways to treat diabetes are decided by the medical care provider. If the sugar levels are not so alarming then the patient is mostly asked to take care of his diet and do plenty of exercise and walking. But if the diabetes condition is more severe then the patient is put on oral medications. Very severe cases of diabetes are treated with insulin via a syringe or insulin pump. What are the causes of diabetes? Family history does have a role to play in type 1 diabetes though eating unhealthy high-calorie food and no exercise are the main causes for diabetes type 2.
